Just over a year ago TFL introduced the Barclays Cycle hire scheme and all the promotion that went with it. The public seemed to have embraced the scheme, but interestingly not the name. I love that the power of the public re-named the scheme 'The Boris bikes' after Boris Johnson himself and the name has stuck. If you search for Boris bikes in google it brings up TFL as the top result - showing that this is even being build into its SEO. The rule of thumb? Never underestimate the power of public brand perception, after all they shape your product, marketing strategy and ultimately success!

After recent comments on the BBC suggesting that the official Olympic posters bear no relation to London or 2012 the artist Sarah Hydman has come up with some fabulous alternatives. Sarah's posters address this as they are created from images of everyday living and working in East London.

We at K4 were already one step ahead of Sarah, as we had already produced our very own version for one of our clients for their recent exhibition stand. Can you guess which ones ours? ... ok so the K4 logo kind of gives it away!

Facebook are therefore adding a new feature dubbed ‘People Talking About This’, which will appear underneath ‘Likes’ on all pages. This feature aims to measure the value of social media for businesses and brands by highlighting conversations that are happening about your products.

From a users perspective, pages with high ‘People Talking About This’ ratings are ones that will have compelling content. This in turn will make creators more motivated to ensure their pages are comment-worthy to keep people talking about their business.

This 1,720 sq metre space between the Tower and the sea front demonstrates Blackpool's rich comedy heritage. This week British Airways ditched its 'World's favorite airline' tagline and launched its new slogan and over arching brand proposition - To Fly. To Serve.
Its hardly surprising that BA decided to refocus its proposition considering its tarnished reputation after 18 months of strikes and negative publicity it generated. The 'World's favorite airline' slogan is hard to justify after all this and in todays cheap airline alternatives and deep recession, one mans cheap as chips airline, becomes anothers 'world's favorite airline'

So... To Fly. To Serve. I feel this has great potential and the subsequent adverts are very 'touchy feely' - but I think consumers might see past this a bit too easily as a refocus on customer service, but maybe thats not such a bad thing. It tries to instill trust, we get the job done ala SAS 'Who dares wins' even the crest looks a bit military.

On one side I love the honesty, but the other makes me think how long can this proposition last?, after all even the cheap airlines Fly and serve - the interesting part will be seeing how BA define how they conduct business from now on that seperates them from the rest. Lets just hope the customer service remains first class.

At K4 we have to conduct a whole variety of photoshoots from repotage for a financial client to sexy fashion shots. Without sounding old, I remember the days of film, standing in a cold field with a polaroid test shot under my armpit, to so it will develop. I also remember the anticipation of seeing the 'trannies' (film not drag) coming back and spending hours over a lightbox.

Today we have the luxury of digital point and shoot, fire forget and pretty much know you have the shot in the bag. However there is always a time, even with digital that you find a great shot but the focus is slightly out or the focus point is ever so slightly out. Well now there is a solution, you have to see this to believe it.

Lytro - is a new type of camera, that allows you to refocus the shot, outside of the camera!! This nifty camera takes in the whole scene, click on the arrow of the image below and try it for yourself.

Part of our Job at K4 is to develop 'metaphoric' interpretations to everyday problems. It is this train of thought that engages the user and opens a dialogue with them. It is a challenging task as no business/issue can be treated the same.

The above is one such metaphoric interpretation, we find inspiring. Artist Frederick McSwain used 13,138 dice to create this portrait of Wong(his friend artist Tobias Wong) called Die. Wong died at the age of 35, or 13,138 days. Its an interesting tribute and certainly an engaging interpretation.

This is in fact a Lamborghini Countach. Part of a series of experiments (The Lo res project) looking at various objects to see what they look like if they were presented in low resolution. In this eample they built it for real. It's very Blade Runner, now slap on some wheels, engine and this would be the coolest car on the planet!!

We created a new website and brand style which would resonate with its audience. The new site integrated with the usual social media channels, but also a 'Lifestyle' section which is populated with user generated content. Cant believe im saying it, but I think Nokia might be one step ahead. Rather than taking a iphone, blowing it up, Nokia has re-thought interaction with Augmented Reality glasses with motion tracking. Ok it is still a concept, but this is the sort of 'magical', biblical device I hoped Stevie boy had announced!

So last night finally, after all the hype over the last 8 years, saw Apple launch the iPad, so have they done it again? im not too sure. I am a great advocate of apple, what you would call an early adopter. Yes I was there at the launch of the iphone, heck I even used to sell the first Apple Macs, LC250's of years gone by plus ive been using macs for over 15 years.

I always enjoy Steve Jobs keynote speeches but last night I was left waiting for the hook that convinces me to hand over the cash. Sure it looks great, but its not revolutionary or even magical, as I heard the same speech three years ago when he announced the iphone. I wanted to hear it can part seas, change the weather or something even more biblical! What I was left thinking was, and I hate to say it was 'I can make do without', after all we are just crawling out of recession. My iphone does it all, sure the screen is small, but my journeys don't require me to carry extra kit, basically if i had a ipad, i would still need to carry my iphone too.

So it comes down to the marketing. How will apple convince people they need this product. I believe that the iPad could go two ways. The first is the, ifad stage. It will depend how peoples need/want for technology will outweigh the cost. Will this just be a passing transition to something better, such as flexible/wearable screens or glasses that utilise Augmented Reality?

The second route is the success of software. The app store has been marketed perfectly in that there is something for everyone and apps can be built by virtually anyone. I think the iPads success will be what can third parties do with it, but I feel that hardware will be its limitation and there wont be a clear enough distinction between the three market segments.

So as the next few months unfold, i look forward in seeing the marketing power of apple and see whether the iPad is really an iFad or not!

Creating photography for a brand it easy right, just snap away with a camera? Well actually quite a lot goes into a photoshoot to achieve those great images, which is often forgotten.

K4 recently completed the latest photoshoot for Lions Rampant, so.....models, check. Photographer, check. Makeup artist and stylist, check. Shot list, check. Recee the locations, check.
The shoot was a great success and as you can see from the video it was great fun, even if you arrive on location at 8am to start shooting and the client doesnt arrive with the models until 10am...Cheers Rich ;)

And now the best part, as expected is Starke. After creating the Lions Rampant brand, last week finally saw the launch of Lions Rampant's new website. The launch on wednesday, followed by a emailer to the existing 5k database and 35k others saw the site visits go off the scale and is was great to see the sales rolling in.

The challenge for this website was to create an entire package for the Lions Rampant team which contained; full shopping facility, behavioral marketing, blog, galleries, invoicing, tracking, personal accounts, newsletter system and whilst all being scalable and updatable by Lions Rampant.....the list is endless. Save your logo is a very clever idea, with a very good purpose. The goal is simple get brands that use animals as their brand marks to become ambassadors for that animal. Lacoste is one of the first main stream brands that have signed up to push their 'ECO' credentials for their 75 year old Crocodile logo. So who's next....Penguin? Jaguar? or even Playboy?
